Can Anyone Be Hypnotized?

Have you ever wondered why some people respond instantly to hypnosis while others take a little more time? It all comes down to suggestibility—how your subconscious mind receives and interprets information. According to Dr. John Kappas, founder of the school I received my training from- Hypnosis Motivation Institute, there are two main suggestibility types: Physical and Emotional. He discovered this by working with thousands of clients, and understanding yours can help you get the most out of hypnosis.
For years, it was believed that some people simply couldn’t be hypnotized. However, Dr. John Kappas discovered that the key to hypnosis lies in the way suggestions are delivered. By studying how people process information, he found that using different language patterns—direct and literal for Physical Suggestibles, indirect and inferred for Emotional Suggestibles—allowed nearly everyone to enter hypnosis successfully. His breakthrough proved that hypnosis isn’t about susceptibility; it’s about communication.
Physical Suggestibility-
If you’re a Physical Suggestible, you process information literally and respond well to direct suggestions. You tend to be expressive, open with emotions, and easily connect with others. Hypnosis feels natural to you, and you might go into trance quickly when guided in a straightforward manner.
Traits of Physical Suggestibles:
✔ Respond well to direct, literal suggestions
✔ Comfortable expressing emotions
✔ Thrive on connection and social interactions
✔ Experience hypnosis as a deep, immersive state
Emotional Suggestibility-
If you’re an Emotional Suggestible, you process information more analytically and respond best to indirect suggestions. You might not outwardly express emotions as much, and you need to understand and trust the process before fully relaxing into hypnosis.
Traits of Emotional Suggestibles:
✔ Respond well to inferred, indirect suggestions
✔ More reserved in expressing emotions
✔ Prefer logical explanations before trusting a process
✔ Experience hypnosis as a gradual deepening
Somnambulists: The Best of Both Worlds-
Some individuals display a nearly equal balance of Physical and Emotional Suggestibility, making them what’s known as somnambulists. These individuals are highly responsive to hypnosis and can easily enter deep trance states. They tend to accept both direct and indirect suggestions, making them ideal candidates for hypnosis. Somnambulists often experience vivid hypnotic phenomena, such as deep relaxation, heightened imagination, and even hypnotic amnesia or anesthesia.
So Can Anyone Be Hypnotized?
Absolutely! No matter your suggestibility type, if you’re open to the experience, hypnosis can work for you. A skilled hypnotherapist tailors their approach to match your unique way of processing suggestions, ensuring you enter a trance state in the most effective way for you.
